The ATO Has Extended Credit Card Payments to 30 June 2027
The ATO has extended its credit card deadline. It will now keep accepting credit card payments for tax obligations until 30 June 2027, instead of stopping after 30 November 2026.
This is a delay, not a cancellation. The ATO says it will stop accepting credit cards after 30 June 2027. The extension follows discussions with the government and the provision of transitional funding, and the ATO says it will keep consulting on how to support taxpayers who are experiencing financial hardship or can't pay by other methods.
If you were planning to switch by 30 November, you now have more time. Here's what changed, what hasn't, and how to use the extra months well.
What Has Changed
- Credit card payments to the ATO now work up to and including 30 June 2027. The earlier cut-off was after 30 November 2026.
- After 30 June 2027, credit card payments to the ATO will be unsuccessful.
- The ATO says taxpayers who want to keep paying by credit card after that date may use third-party payment providers, and should check the fees, charges and processing timeframes first.
- The ATO is still consulting on support for people in financial hardship. It hasn't announced details yet.
If You Have a Payment Plan
You can change your payment method in ATO online services, including moving from a credit card to a debit card. The ATO sets cut-offs for changes, at least 1 business day before the instalment date for debit card direct debit and at least 3 business days before for bank account direct debit, so don't leave it to the last day.
Ways to Pay That Still Work
The ATO's how to pay page lists the full set, and its managing your payment plan page shows how to change a plan.
Dates to Watch
Monthly BAS is due on the 21st of the following month, and quarterly BAS on the 28th of the month after the quarter ends, according to the ATO's BAS agent lodgment program page. Card payments work for anything you pay on or before 30 June 2027.
- May monthly BAS: due Monday 21 June 2027. Card still works.
- June monthly BAS: due Wednesday 21 July 2027. This is the first monthly BAS you can't pay by credit card, unless you pay it early.
- April to June quarter BAS: due Wednesday 28 July 2027. This is the first quarterly BAS affected.
If we lodge your BAS, your due dates may differ. Check with your bookkeeper.
Use the Extra Time
This is a reprieve, not a reversal. If a credit card is part of how you manage tax payments, the sensible move is to plan now so 30 June 2027 doesn't arrive as a surprise.
- Put your BAS and tax payments into your cash flow forecast.
- Set money aside as sales come in, not when the bill lands.
- Talk to us if you rely on a card to bridge cash flow. We can look at what replaces it.
- If you want to keep paying by card after 30 June 2027, the ATO says third-party payment providers are an option. Check each provider's fees, charges and processing times, and confirm it's legitimate before you hand over any details.
The ATO encourages anyone who needs extra support to contact the ATO or speak to their registered tax professional.
Watch for Scams
Payment changes are exactly what scammers piggyback on. The ATO urges taxpayers to stay alert and verify the credentials of any third-party provider before sharing information or making payments. If a message asks you to update payment details, don't use the link. Go to the ATO through ATO online services or ato.gov.au directly.
Your Checklist
- Work out how you currently pay the ATO: BAS, PAYG, tax debts or a payment plan.
- If you have a credit card-linked payment plan, make a note to change it before your next instalment due after 30 June 2027.
- Decide what replaces the card: BPAY, direct deposit, direct debit, or a third-party provider you've checked.
- Add the new payment dates to your cash flow forecast.
- Let your bookkeeper know.
So What Does This Mean for You?
You've got until 30 June 2027, so there's no need to rush. But the card option is still ending, and the businesses that plan their replacement now won't be scrambling in June.
